To promote cooperation and communication with world first-class universities and research institutes, to inspire students for clinical medical research, to better understand the forefront of medical development, and to expand global knowledge, the international workshop project is designed for graduate students by Zhejiang University to encourage different disciplines to be involved. This project is established and led by the team of Professor YE Zhaoming, Director, Department of orthopedic, from the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine.
Considering of the pandemic, online international exchange workshop for orthopedic postgraduate’s project was held during the last five months on March 8th, April 7th, May 12th, May 28th, and Aug 9th separately with 16 lessons. Participants involve hospital experts, professors from the United States, UK, Singapore and other world-famous research universities to provide expert lectures, case discussions, surgery demonstrations focusing on bone tumor, joint and spine etc.
The first phase of international exchange
On March 8, 2022, the Department of Orthopaedic Oncology had a 3-hour communication with Professor Francis Hornicek of UCLA Medical Center (15 offline and more than 10 online). They learned the intraoperative blood recovery of chordal tumor surgery, and discussed the medical records of sacral tumor and spinal metastatic tumor scraping and decompress internal fixation. The two sides discussed the treatment plan.
The second phase of international exchange
On April 7, 2022, our department had a 3-hour communication with Professor David Dalury from University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, focusing on the experience of joint revision surgery and postoperative rehabilitation methods
The third phase of international exchange
On May 7, 2022, the Department of Orthopedics Spine Department had a 4-hour communication with Professor Khaled Kebaish of Hopkins University School of Medicine, focusing on the surgical experience of adult scoliosis, postoperative rehabilitation methods, and treatment strategies for adult degenerative scoliosis
The fouth phase of international exchange
On May 28, 2022, Professor Patrick P.Lin of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center gave a lecture (50 people offline and more than 20 people online). The meeting lasted for 3 hours and 30 minutes. He talked about the minimally invasive treatment of pelvic metastatic disease, the evolution of MIS in metastatic spinal disease, and the external articular resection and reconstruction of hip tumors. Thus improving patients' quality of life, and even a small number of patients with single metastatic tumors may be cured.
The fifth phase of international exchange
On 9 August 2022, Professor Stefano Boriani of the Calais Azzi Orthopaedic Institute in Milan again answered and discussed the questions raised last time. The meeting lasted for 3 hours and reviewed the progress in the treatment of spinal tumors, the methods of directed radiotherapy and proton radiotherapy for osteosarcoma, minimally invasive resection of spinal tumors, the use of the latest implants, and the treatment of spinal tumors. It improves the life span of tumor patients.
